The cover design for Holly Robbins’ PhD Dissertation, titled: “Materializing Technologies: Surfacing Focal Things and Practices with Design”. In her dissertation, Dr. Robbins problematises the current design of many current IoT technologies. Instead of designing IoT devices as sleek, minimalistic and easy-to-use black boxes, Robbins suggests alternative design strategies to the prevalent design paradigm.

The cover had to convey the core message of the dissertation: that as designers and HCI researchers we need to identify and open up technological “black boxes”.
